World Football Academy: Dutch Conditioning Trainer Raymond Verheijen To Run More Courses In South Africa

THE World Football Academy are happy to announce that Raymond Verheijen will be returning to South Africa to run a number of courses in July. Let’s take a look at Verheijen’s background and all the details of the upcoming courses.

Verheijen has previously worked with Guus Hiddink, Frank Rijkaard, Louis van Gaal and Dick Advocaat at three FIFA Football World Cups and three UEFA European Championships with the Netherlands, Russia, Korea and South Korea. EURO 2012 was his 7th consecutive major international football tournament since EURO 2000. In high level club football his name as a fitness expert has become well known. He assisted the likes of FC Barcelona (Frank Rijkaard), Chelsea FC (Guus Hiddink) as well as Manchester City (Mark Hughes), and ensured the best injury records at domestic level.

In terms of ‘youth development’ the Feyenoord Academy is yet another example of what can be achieved following Verheijen’s periodisation philosophy. They have developed into one of the best football academies in the world and are the main provider for the Dutch National Youth Teams.

Verheijen has a UEFA A coaching license and argues that too many fitness coaches are not from a football background. Therefore they do not fully understand the sport and its relationship to training and preparation. “Players get unnecessarily injured. Their careers are are shortened by incompetent training methods.”

The conditioning expert believes that as many as 80 percent of all football injuries are preventable and based on incorrect or overloaded training. “If football is an intensity sport, then less is more and you have to focus on the quality of training instead of the quantity,” states Verheijen, whose career was cut short by a chronic hip injury.

In South Africa, many of the Premier Soccer League’s conditioning trainers have attended these courses, but the mission statement of The World Football Academy was also to allow amateur coaches the access to top quality courses and instructors. This season, Ajax Cape Town conditioning coach, Craig Von Wielligh has been running internal courses at the club as Verheijen’s periodisation model is implemented at every level of the club, from the academy through to the First Team. At a recent football business conference, Ajax Cape Town’s chairman George Comitis spoke about the implementation of this periodisation model at the club.
